Exercise to Relieve Stress

Most of the general population lives their lives in a state of stress. Without an outlet to relieve that stress, your mental and physical health can be at stake. A lot of common stress is caused by work, finances, family, and friends. Having a regular exercise program is not only beneficial to your physical well-being, but also to your mental health. Whether it be a structured program, strength training, running, yoga, HIIT workouts, circuits, or simply getting outside to walk, some form of exercise is better than nothing in most cases.

Stress is a common issue in today's fast-paced world, and it can take a toll on both mental and physical health if not managed properly. Sources of stress can come from various aspects of life such as work, finances, family, and friends. Engaging in regular exercise can help alleviate stress and improve overall well-being. Whether it's structured programs, strength training, running, yoga, HIIT workouts, circuits, or simply taking a walk outside, any form of exercise can be beneficial. So, make exercise a part of your daily routine and see the positive impact it can have on your life.

My favorite types of exercise are strength training, Yoga (see my beginner's guide to yoga), HIIT, hiking, running and backpacking. But no matter what type of exercise you choose, you can see the benefits to your physical and mental health.

Physical Well-being

Most people know that being active is beneficial to your physical health and aid in weight loss. So it’s no secret that regular exercise can improve muscle strength and cardiovascular health, but also can improve skin health, reduce chronic disease and pain.

By creating a regular exercise routine your body will thank you as you age. Not only do we lose muscle strength as we age, but also lose energy levels. By strength training you are constantly challenging the muscles and increasing strength. So as we age and continuing to exercise can decrease the loss of muscle strength.

Mental Health

Most people don’t realize the power that exercise has on mental health. During exercise the body increases the production of happy hormones: endorphins, serotonin, and norepinephrine, which are hormones that increase the production of positive feelings as well as reduce perception of pain and reduce the feelings of anxiety and depression.

Because of the increased production of endorphins, serotonin, and norepinephrine, energy levels are also increased. Also, since you’re doing more physical activity, increasing happy hormones and reducing the amount of fatigue throughout the day, your body has the opportunity to relax and get quality sleep.

My Take Away

In my experience, exercise is my me time. I love that I can take whatever time I have to get my workout in to just focus on me. I can let the stresses go for the time being and simply be in the present moment. I’m not thinking about my to-do lists. I’m not thinking about the things that worry me. I am only thinking about the workout I am trying to do. So not only can I get all of the benefits that the body naturally creates, but I can learn to shift my focus on being present. Often times, I can take that mental practice and apply it to other situations in my life to reduce stress other ways.

No matter what exercise you choose, in most cases moving your body beneficial to your physical well-being as well as your mental health. So do an exercise you love and just be present. Once you can master that focus during exercise, when it’s easiest to focus on what you’re trying to accomplish, you can learn to apply that same focus in other areas of your life. Which then further helps to reduce stress levels.
