4 Tips to Navigating Injury

Have you ever felt like your fitness goals are derailed due to injury? Same. I have had an ongoing injury in my low back. I had to take a week off recently to allow it to heal. I hated that I had to do that. It felt like the end of the world. But I decided to shift my mindset to prevent further injuries one day.

When I first injured it, I went to the ER thinking I had done something to my spine. Luckily, my spine is fine, but I get this pain in my lower back on the left side that shoots into my glutes. I have been dealing with this injury for about ten years and haven’t been doing much preventative care to keep it from acting up. I have not gone to the doctor again to determine this, but I think I had pulled a muscle that pinches the sciatica nerve, which still acts up when I move right. Most recently, I was mid-squat, and it was acting up, so I had to stop my workout and take some unplanned rest days. I hated that I had to do this. I wanted to keep up my workout routine. But I realized that I needed to do something different with my training and recovery to promote healing and prevent this same injury from acting up.

The most significant change that I have made is to move more intentionally. I need to strengthen my core and upper body to lower the risk of injury. It felt like a step back., but it was a sign that I needed that my training method was not working. Changing my approach to training can make the most significant difference long term.

  1. Go to the Doctor

    Okay, let’s get this out of the way right out of the gate. I am not a doctor or medical professional; this advice is based only on my experience. If you think your injuries are severe, please seek help from a medical professional. A doctor can ensure you are not dealing with anything serious that requires more attention to heal. A physical therapist can help you determine the best course of action that helps your injury heal and recover. Before returning to any physical activity after an injury, seek a medical professional’s help. Now that housekeeping is out, let’s get into my tips.
